The Human Rights Project:About
From The Human Rights Project
Welcome to the ProgressiveIslam.Org's Human Rights site. Human Rights is a wiki devoted to documenting human rights and humanist issues within the Muslim community world-wide. Which means that we cover some of the most fundamental issues of our day from the vantage point of Muslims as victims, protagonists, or just plain engaged and involved citizens.
What do we mean by "human rights issues"?
ProgressiveIslam.Org affirms the equal status and equal worth of all human beings, regardless of religion, gender, race, ethnicity, or sexuality. Islam holds that this essential dignity is due to humanity's rank as precious creations of God, and recipients of divine breath, as stated in the Holy Qur'an.
We affirm that justice and compassion should be the guiding principles for all aspects of human conduct. Islam holds that these qualities are characteristics of God as revealed in the Holy Qur'an, divine qualities that are ethical virtues to which all human beings should aspire to emulate. In accordance with these principles we will discuss and document violations of the rights of human beings within the Muslim community world-wide.
While we cover all issues as they happen, one clear and conscious goal on this site is to focus on crimes committed from within our community by Muslims either against other Muslims or against non-Muslims because of their religion, gender, race, ethnicity, or sexuality. It is our intention to bring to light the harm we do to our own community and the human community at large. At this point in time in history we cannot afford to cover over our wrongdoings against ourselves and others for the sake of self-protection from a sometimes hostile non-Muslim world.
Our self-protection will only come by telling the truth about ourselves. Hiding our wrongdoings now is only destroying a way of life that has nourished us since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, alayhi salam.
We must transform our ourselves, and in doing so the community of humanity itself, by enacting the justice and compassion towards others that was commanded to us by God.
